The Best Treadmill Workout Program

Treadmills are a great way to get the blood flowing through your body (not to mention burning calories), especially if it is raining or stormy outside. Gym memberships cost a fortune, so putting the money into your own machine which you will own forever is a much more logical idea.

However, given that you will be exercising at home, chances are that you will have no one to assist you with your exercise - or to correct your form if you are going wrong. For that reason, we've written this article to give you a breakdown of what we think is the best treadmill workout program in existence. It's helped many people burn many calories over many years - and if you stick to it, those results could be equalled in your own treadmill workout regime.

Starting Slowly - Don't Overdo It

One of the keys to success when incorporating a treadmill workout into your overall exercise program is to ensure that you don't overdo it. Many people fall into the trap of starting out too hard and too fast, therefore creating injury and illness - which is completely unnecessary.

To give you an indication, we recommend that you do the following amounts of exercise per week:

  • 5 lots of exercise on the treadmill per week (i.e. 2 days off).
  • 20 to 30 minutes each day.
  • 1 day with 45 minutes.

This is a very basic program which means that you have five days exercising and a two-day break. The two days can be at any time during the week, as long as you do five days of exercise.

Building Up Your Strength

At the same time as your treadmill workout, you should be doing strength training exercises to build up strength in your muscles and upper body so that you are then able to extend the amount of time that you use the treadmill for each week.

We recommend that over the course of six weeks, you build up your exercise to 30 to 40 minutes a day, with one day exercising for 60 minutes.

This allows you to increase the intensity of the workout, and therefore achieve better results in the long term because of the increased calories that you will be burning with each exercise episode. Remember, higher intensity means more calories burnt - and ultimately, more weight loss.
